This online booklet, sponsored by the United States Department of Education, includes activities for families with children from infancy through age six. Most of the activities make learning experiences out of the every-day routines in which you and your children participate. The activities are designed to be fun for both you and your children as you help them gain the skills they need to become readers.

Activities for Reading & Writing Fun
This website offers a wealth of activities for parents of young children. The activities are grouped according to age, ranging from birth to grade six. These activities are designed to promote love of reading and language ability. The website also includes a suggested reading list.

Children's Books at iVillage.com
This website offers recommended reading lists for various ages and reading levels, as well as a host of articles for parents about helping their children with language skills and reading. Please be aware that advertisements are on this site.

Multicultural Resources for Kids

This website, created by the New York Public Library, offers a list of 100 favorite children's books (ages Pre-K-12), broken down into ten categories such as animal stories, history, science, etc.

Education For Kids Reading Lists
This website has recommendation lists of quality, educational books for kids in age groups from Preschool and Kindergarten to Grades 7 and 8.

Between the Lions
The Between the Lions website is based on the popular PBS program, and offers stories, games, and songs designed to promote reading as a fun pastime. After reading each story, children can try out related adventure activities.

One Hundred Picture Books
This website, created by the New York Public Library, offers a list of 100 picture books that everyone should know. It is a good list for very young children.

Reading Rainbow
The reading rainbow website has information and trivia questions about the kids books featured on the Reading Rainbow program on TV. Also included are some book-based games and activities, and an opportunity to enter a book writing/illustrating contest for young authors.

Language Activities Online for Kids
This website has activities and games designed to help children practice and improve their vocabulary, spelling, and grammar skills.

Room 108 is an educational activity center for kids. The kids stories make this site unique. The stories have sound and animation. There is lots of fun for children but all with an educational focus. There are songs, art, math, kids games, children's stories and much more.

Storybook Online
This fun site offers a host of stories to read and listen to. You can also write your own stories and play book-related games.

World of Reading
The World of Reading website is designed to get children excited about reading, writing, and publishing while increasing their knowledge of the internet. It offers children of all ages interesting materials to explore, and encourages active participation in reading and writing through the use of electronic communications. The site has book recommendations and book reviews, as well as books available to read right over the internet. Also included are links to other websites devoted to urging kids to read and write, including help with book reports and places to get stories published online.

Candlelight Stories
The Candlelight Stories website offers a number of stories to read, as well as audio books to listen to, an opportunity for kids to connect with a pen pal from a different country, spelling and other language-based games, and links to other sites about reading.
